The first time I visited Valladolid in the state of Yucatán in México was a few years ago during my first visit to Cancún. That time I booked a tour to Chichén Itzá and a stop in Valladolid was included; albeit a short one. We weren’t there for more than 30 minutes, but I knew it was a place I wanted to come back to.

A few years later I returned to Cancun but this time with my parents so we booked a tour to Chichén Itzá which again also included a stop in this magical city, and once again said I needed to come back.

Which is why when we booked our trip to Cancún last year, I knew we had to visit since this time around we had no tours scheduled. We decided to rent a car and do a road trip to Mérida, Yucatán, a first for all of us (separate post coming soon), and we would stop along the way in Valladolid which luckily happened to be the exact middle point between both places which means we not only got to visit it for a longer period of time, but we also stopped by on our way back to Cancún.

Why is it so special? Valladolid is considered a Pueblo Mágico which means that it joins a long list of towns in México that the Secretary of Tourism has declared a Magical Town due to its “magical” experience – by reason of their natural beauty, cultural richness, traditions, folklore, historical relevance, cuisine, art crafts and great hospitality.

This time around we realized how much beauty there really is all around the town and how magical it felt to be there. Here are a few pictures from our visit which lasted less than 24 hours, and see for yourself why you need to visit Valladolid.
