A couple of months ago I was invited to the L’Oréal Paris Melanoma Awareness event with Diane Keaton and Génesis Rodríguez here in Los Angeles. It was an intimate gathering with fellow bloggers and L’Oréal Paris to talk about Melanoma and using sunscreen to prevent it. I hadn’t shared it on the blog because I was waiting for Summer to start and figured this week would be perfect since almost everyone will be outdoors for the 4th of July.
The event was held in a beautiful home in Beverly Hills with spectacular views of Los Angeles. Too bad that that day wasn’t as sunny as it usually is in LA. It was a gray day and we were expecting rain, but even then, the views were beautiful.
During the gathering, Diane and Génesis spoke about how skin cancer hit close to home for both of them. Diane herself had skin cancer years ago and Génesis’ grandfather had skin cancer. They talked about how they protect themselves now and which products they use to prevent it.
It was surprising to know that even though there have been so many campaigns to bring awareness to skin cancer, the number of people being diagnosed with melanoma has been going up. People are just not taking this serious. Ladies, also note that sunscreen is the #1 product you can use to prevent wrinkles! We’re always looking for creams to help us in our fight against premature wrinkles, the solution is sunscreen because the sun can age you prematurely!
In the panel was also a fellow Latina who happens to be an aesthetician in Beverly Hills and she provided some additional tips of how to use sunscreen and what irregularities to look for that might raise a red flag.
Here are a few of the tips we learned during the chat:
-ALWAYS wear sunscreen.
Even if it is cloudy outside, it is imperative to wear sunscreen as the sun can still penetrate through the clouds.
-Look for broad spectrum sunscreen.
Broad spectrum sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
-Wear sunscreen under your makeup and find makeup that also contains sunscreen.
Remember, both must contain broad spectrum sunscreen.
-If you’re going to be exposed to the sun, you must reapply every 2-3 hours.
-Always check your skin for irregularities and have them checked by a dermatologist.
If there’s a mole that wasn’t there before or if it has changed in size or color, have it checked out. It’s always better to err on the side of caution.
-Visit a dermatologist about once a year.
A good dermatologist will inspect you from head to toe for any irregularity.
-Don’t forget the areas that we tend to forget to put sunscreen on, such as the neck, the ears, and the hands.
Even if you work in an office, it is important to wear sunscreen on your neck and hands as on your ride home you will be under the sun for a good period of time.
