If I had to use only word to describe Oaxaca, it would be magical. And if I had to use one to describe Hierve el Agua, it’s breathtaking. The place is absolutely breathtaking and you’ll see why in the pictures below. But, if you ever get the chance to actually make it out there, please do! Put it on your bucket list!
As I’ve mentioned before, I do extensive research when planning my vacations because I don’t like to waste time, and Oaxaca was no exception. I made sure that we put it into our itinerary because there was no way I was going to travel all the way to Oaxaca and not see this place. The place is about a 2 hour drive from Oaxaca, Oaxaca and once you arrive, you do need to do some light hiking to get to the actual location. Not such a great idea when it’s super hot like the day we visited, but definitely worth it!
Hierve el Agua is a set of natural rock formations that resemble cascades of water. It consists of two rock shelves or cliffs which rise between fifty and ninety meters from the valley below, from which extend nearly white rock formations which look like waterfalls. These formations are created by fresh water springs, whose water is over-saturated with calcium carbonate and other minerals. As the water scurries over the cliffs, the excess minerals are deposited, much in the same manner that stalactites are formed in caves. One of the cliffs, called the “cascada chica” (small waterfall) or the Amphitheatre, contains two large artificial pools for swimming as well as a number of small natural pools. One of the artificial pools is very near the edge of the cliff.

Si tuviera que escoger una palabra para describir a Oaxaca, sería mágico. Y si tuviera que escoger otra para describir a Hierve el Agua, sería impresionante. El lugar es impresionantemente bello! Podrás ver por qué lo digo en las fotos de abajo.
Como he mencionado antes, tomar tiempo para planificar mis vacaciones de antemano es algo que siempre procuro hacer ya que no me gusta perder el tiempo durante mis vacaciones, y Oaxaca no fue la excepción . Me aseguré de que separáramos un día durante el viaje para visitar el lugar ya que no podía ser que viajara hasta allá y no visitara a Hierve el Agua! El lugar queda como a 2 horas de Oaxaca, Oaxaca en carro y una vez allí, sí hay que caminar y escalar un poco para llegar al lugar. Hacer eso cuando hace mucho calor como el día que fuimos, hace que sea un poco más difícil pero definitivamente vale la pena!
Hierve el Agua es un sistema de cascadas petrificadas, formadas por carbonato de calcio. Las cascadas son de origen natural y se formaron hace miles de años, por el escurrimiento de agua con alto contenido de minerales. Es también un lugar de interés arqueológico, pues posee un complejo sistema de irrigación y terrazas construido por los zapotecas hace unos 2500 años. El agua posee una temperatura de unos 24 grados centígrados y las cascadas tienen entre 12 y 30 metros de alto. El manantial que dió origen a las cascadas se aprovechó para formar una gran alberca que actualmente funciona como balneario natural por sus aguas termales. Además, en la zona hay algunas pozas naturales excavadas desde donde pueden observarse muy bien las cascadas petrificadas.
