Chichén Itzá and the Yucatán Peninsula

Visiting Cancun and not taking advantage to visit Chichen Itza, one of the New 7 Wonders of the World is like visiting Los Angeles and not visiting Disneyland; doesn’t really make sense. Its close proximity to Cancun (about a 2 hour drive) makes it a perfect day trip when visiting which is why I knew that this time around we also needed to visit Chichen Itza. Chichen Itza was a very important Mayan city at one point and is currently one of the most visited archaeological sites in Mexico. It is located in the state of Yucatan; Cancun is in the state of Quintana Roo. Because the archaeological site is located in the middle of a dense jungle, the temperatures tend to be very humid and scorching hot. The first time I visited was in May and now we visited in late April and it was extremely hot and humid, and we were told that wasn’t the hottest it gets; it gets even hotter during the Summer season. They mentioned that December is the best time to visit since it’s when the weather cools a little (but not really), but it is also their rainy season which in turn creates even hotter weather. In other words, it will ALWAYS be hot no matter when you visit so make sure to hydrate well, wear sunscreen and take a hat or cap (if you end up forgetting it, don’t worry because they sell some there and they’re relatively cheap) because the sun burns like no other. We booked a tour that picked us up from our resort and included lunch, as well as a visit to a cenote and a visit the city of Valladolid. Now that I’ve given you a few tips for when you visit, here are some pictures from our visit.

Visitar Cancún y no aprovechar para visitar Chichén Itzá, una de las nuevas 7 maravillas del mundo es como visitar Los Ángeles y no visitar Disneylandia; no hace sentido. Su cercanía a Cancún (alrededor de 2 horas en carro) hace que sea un viaje perfecto de un día. Chichén Itzá fue una ciudad Maya muy importante en su tiempo y es actualmente uno de los sitios arqueológicos más visitados de México. Se encuentra en el estado de Yucatán; Cancún está en el estado de Quintana Roo. Debido a que el sitio arqueológico se encuentra en medio de una densa selva, las temperaturas tienden a ser muy húmedas y calientes. La primera vez que visité fue en mayo y ahora visitamos en abril y las dos veces estaba extremadamente caliente y húmedo. Nuestro guía turístico nos dijo que cuando más caliente y húmedo está es durante los meses del verano y que la mejor época para visitar es en diciembre cuando refresca un poco, aunque no mucho porque esa también es la época de lluvia lo que tiende a causar más humedad. En otras palabras, no importa cuando decidas visitar, siempre estará caliente, así que asegúrate de hidratarte bien, usar protector solar y llevarte un sombrero o gorra (si se te olvida, no te preocupes que ahí venden unos y son relativamente baratos) porque el sol siempre está que quema.
