I receive a lot of compliments on my hair, as well as questions on how I keep it healthy and make my color last. It’s grown quite long AND is healthy, which is great considering I dye it, and when I do, it goes through several processes. I have natural dark brown/black hair. Last year I decided to go lighter and this year, I’ve gone super light. Besides dyeing it lighter, on top of that, I do highlights. As you can imagine, my hair takes a lot of chemicals every time I visit the salon. Since I get asked so much about my hair and how I take care of it, I decided to share a few tips with you.

Use the right shampoo and conditioner. One of my main concerns is having the color fade, which is why it’s very important to use a shampoo and conditioner that will protect your hair and make your color last longer. I recently partnered with Dove Hair to try out their Dove Color Care Shampoo and Conditioner and I love it. As many of you know, because I’ve mentioned it before, I love Dove products. I have been using them for years, and still do, so I knew I would love these products as well. I wasn’t wrong. Not only do they smell really good, they are great at protecting my colored treated hair. Did you know that they protect your colored hair from fading for up to 40 washes?! Plus, as an added benefit (to me), I noticed my hair was easier to comb through, softer, silkier, and there was less frizz. WINNING! The reason it is so good for colored hair is because it contains a Vibrant Color Lock which means it locks in the color for longer compared to other shampoos/conditioners.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Dove Color Care Shampoo and Conditioner both contain coconut and almond oils, which in turn helps restore hair’s shine and helps to nourish. The best thing about it is that it won’t cost you an arm and a leg since both the shampoo and conditioner can be found at your local food, mass and drug retailers nationwide for less than $4 each!

Avoid over washing your hair. The more you wash it, the more you will strip the hair color and the oils needed to keep your hair healthy. You don’t need to wash your hair daily. Years ago, I used to wash it every day and not only did that make my hair color fade, it made my hair dry and frizzy because I was stripping it of essential oils it needed to nourish itself. Once I started washing it with less frequency, not only did my hair color last longer, but my hair started to get healthy as well. I now wash it about every 3-4 days but if I can make it last longer without it looking dirty, of course, I do. The amount of days in between washes varies by person and the activities they do on a daily basis. Play around with yours until you find what’s perfect for you and your hair.

Use thermal heat protection. If you use any heat or styling tools such as a blow dryer, curling iron, and/or a flat iron, you need to protect your hair. There are many products on the market that can help you protect your hair from the constant heat it is exposed to, so shop around and find one that works for you. This is also a reason to stretch out your washes since the more you wash, the more your hair will eventually be exposed to heating tools. Some days you can also try to go au naturale and avoid the heating/styling tools altogether. Give your hair a break sometimes; it will thank you for it.

Once you try all of these tips, trust me you’ll notice a change. Not only will your hair color last longer, but your hair will also be healthier.
