Exclusive Interview with Dominic Santana & Eddie Gonzalez about “All Eyez on Me”
“All Eyez on Me”, the new Tupac Shakur biopic which recently opened in theaters hits a little close to home for me. While I will admit that I’m not a huge hip hop fan, I do know who Tupac was/is because I was in junior high when Tupac rose to fame. Everyone in school loved Tupac while others loved Biggie. Even though I’m not huge on hip hop, I’m gonna side with Tupac on this one, and I’m not just saying it because of this film. All of this also took place in LA which is where I’m originally from which is why when I was invited to the Miami press junket with Dominic Santana and Eddie Gonzalez, I jumped at the chance. Unfortunately I couldn’t make it to the press screening of the film which took place the day before due to another event that I was attending, but I was very much looking forward to the interview.
I did my research as every reporter should do to prepare for my interview and found that the film itself hits even closer to home. Demetrius Shipp Jr. who portrays Tupac Shakur in the film is from Carson, CA and prior to landing this acting gig (this is his first acting job), he was working at a Target store in Long Beach, CA. City that I’m also familiar with since I went to college there. Then came Eddie Gonzalez whose also an LA native of Mexican descent born in Compton and grew up in Lynwood. Being from LA and Southern California, I’m familiar with all of these cities which made me even more proud of this film and the team behind it.
When the time came to conduct the interview (prior to it), I chatted with Eddie about me being from LA as well. As we continued our conversation we realized our parents both currently live in the same city in LA. I’m also proud of the fact that these two gentlemen are Latinos and are such an important asset to this film; they’re not just extras in it. Dominic portrays Suge Knight and is half Puerto Rican while Eddie co-wrote the film and is Mexican American. Something I can also relate to since I’m both Puerto Rican and Mexican. Crazy, right?! Too many coincidences. With that said, I share with you one of the best interviews I believe I’ve done to date. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did in conducting it.
ALL EYEZ ON ME
ALL EYEZ ON ME tells the true and untold story of prolific rapper, actor, poet and activist Tupac Shakur. The film follows Shakur from his early days in New York City to his evolution into being one of the world’s most recognized and influential voices before his untimely death at the age of 25. Against all odds, Shakur’s raw talent, powerful lyrics and revolutionary mind-set propelled him into becoming a cultural icon whose legacy continues to grow long after his passing.
Don’t miss this film now out in theaters!!!
